Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do you sometimes sell out?
A: We are not interested in competing with mass marketed fast food. We are interested in creating a special, quality product from fresh ingredients. Each doughnut is unique, made from scratch, rolled and cut by hand, individually cooked, glazed, and decorated. The dough is made from fresh potatoes, buttermilk, flour, sugar, eggs, live yeast, and our own starter. There are plenty of places that will sell you their doughnuts twenty-four hours a day, but do you really want a doughnut that’s been filled with preservatives, extruded, and frozen for months before you buy it? We have a limited capacity because it takes a LOT of work to make real doughnuts. And anyway, didn’t your mom tell you that the early bird gets the worm?
Q: Do you have bagels?
A: No. We are not experts in bagels (except eating them). For great bagels, we go to BB’s Bagels on McFarland Parkway (http://www.bitchinbagelsatbbs.com), or Essex Bagels & Deli in Johns Creek (770.476.8214).
Q: Do you make gluten free, egg free, dairy free, sugar free, (etc.) doughnuts? Do you have anything suitable for people with nut allergies?
A: Please contact us with your specific allergy requests, understanding that all of these ingredients are present in large quantities in our kitchen, and we are therefore unable to to certify that any doughnut is 100% free of any particular ingredient.
Q: Where does the name “Dutch Monkey” come from?
A: We call our daughter “monkey”, and doughnuts originated from the Dutch olykoeks. Hence--Dutch Monkey. Yes, we realize that that only marginally makes sense. :)
Q: Is this a franchise?
A: Nope. It’s a mom and pop shop. It was conceived and created by us, after much frustration in trying to find real doughnuts we wouldn’t have to buy a plane ticket to get.
Q: Why don’t you have a phone number on your website?
A: We’re busy making doughnuts--and yeast doesn’t wait for phone calls! Please contact us, and we’ll be sure to answer promptly.
Q: I have a great marketing opportunity for you--would you like to buy an ad/buy space in my coupon book/sponsor my kid’s soccer team/donate doughnuts for teachers or some very cute puppies, or high school kids?
A: We’d love to support all of our customers’ causes, but being a fledgling business in an unkind economy, we’ve got to be very, very selective about such things. We do not do any paid marketing, and limit donations. Please contact us to discuss your requests. Keep in mind that due to the volume of requests we receive, you may not receive a response for a week or more, and that we plan donations at least a month in advance.
Q: What do you do with your leftover doughnuts? Can I pick them up for my charity event, school meeting, or my hungry pet tigers?
A: We have a partnership with a local men’s regeneration program, No Longer Bound. They pick up any doughnuts we may have left at the end of the day. Visit their website to learn more about their greenhouse, professional print shop, woodshop, and other industries that are open to the public.
Q: Do you do delivery, catering, large orders for pickup, or birthday parties?
A: No, no, yes (within our limits), and no. Contact us for details.
Q: Why do you close so early/Why are you closed on Mondays?
A: We start working at 3:15am, so 4pm on weekdays makes for a long day already! We’re closed Mondays to catch up on sleep. :)
Q: Geez, what time do you guys wake up?
A: 2:30am.
